Lukashenko again limits independent TV channels
18 June 2007Belarussian president Alexander Lukashenko suppresses independent mass media. His newest plan: the satellite aerials receiving foreign TV channels should disappear, writes Frankfurter Rundschau.
Thus the European autocrat resorts to an argument which could use the burgomaster of any German small town, marks the edition, - plates look ugly and spoil the view of the city.
Nevertheless, suppressed by Lukashenko opposition, does not trust such explanation. The real reason is too obvious. To preserve his powers the president wants to exclude influence of an independent mass-media, says oppositional politician Alexander Milinkevich. Obviously, those plates hinder him - especially as their number constantly grows. According to estimations, every tenth Belarussian family has an opportunity to receive foreign TV programs. If the state will really remove in the nearest future satellite aerials, regime’s opponents are ready for this. One remedial organization prepares a handbook under the name “What you should do to rescue the aerial”.
Till now national state channels submit only to the president. Radio stations and TV companies receives money from the government which determines what to put on the air. Thus approximately two thirds of telecasting is propaganda.
