Parents in Spain are forbidden to whip children
24 December 2007The Congress of deputies (Parliament) of Spain has approved the bill, which forbids parents to whip children.
Until now parents were authorized “to correct reasonably and moderately behavior” of their offsprings.
However the Spanish deputies have changed this paragraph. The new variant of the Civil Code creates physical inviolability of children, transfers Reuters.
The ruling socialists of Spain time and again received abuse from conservative opposition for denying of traditional public and family values by legalization of unisex marriages and similar liberal innovations.
The Conservative People’s Party this time has also voted against the bill, insisting that the interdiction will make parents helpless. However the document all the same was approved by the majority.
Whipping of children at home and at school is legislatively forbidden in 16 European countries. This October the British government has cancelled an interdiction on corporal punishments at home, provided there would be no signs of physical influence - bruises, grazes or swellings.
