“Traffic lights - vampires” worked for the city administration
16 October 2007In Italy has burst a scandal connected to so-called “traffic lights - vampires” which provoked violation of road laws.
The case in point is traffic lights in Milan suburbs, which were switching yellow light to red too quickly, and drivers physically had no time to stop in time. Thus tags of “cars - infringers” were photographed, and their owners had to pay huge penalties.
At first journalists of the fifth channel of the Italian TV have become interested in protests of the drivers. They have filmed the work of “smart” traffic lights and have shown this report all over the country.
After that the Prosecutor Office and financial police in Milan became occupied with the problem. Their experts have dismounted “blood-thirsty devices” and found out, that they worked in such mode not because were defective, but because were made in such a way. The more infringers – the more penalties, the city treasury is fuller.
Besides investigators have found out, that firm Scae which has gained the tender for installation of traffic lights with the special equipment, fixing infringers, had signed the contract with city administration according to which it would receive not only €200 thousand annually for service of traffic lights, but also 25,1 % from each penalty.
