EU has cancelled the sugar protocol
3 October 2007EU has unilaterally made the decision to go out from the trading agreement, which had provided preferences to the former European colonies - suppliers of sugar to Europe, so-called sugar protocol.
The decision was taken without voting during the meeting of EU ministers responsible for questions of competition, and will come into force from October, 2009.
“Provisions of the sugar protocol had provided for interests of both EU, and the countries of Africa and Caribbean-Pacific region. They allowed the second to use a regular and profitable market of sugar production, but since now the agreement cannot be maintained”, - was said in the EU statement.
Representatives of the countries-exporters of sugar have already declared that dissolution of the trading agreement with the EU will cost them “some billions dollars”, and also will entail slippage of production and workplaces. Nevertheless, the EU has not excluded an opportunity of signing new duty-free agreements with ex-colonies- sugar suppliers.
