In England and Wales 3 thousand crimes were committed by children under 10 years
5 September 2007In 2006 in England and Wales children younger than 10 years have committed 2840 offences. According to the statistics, approximately half of these crimes are vandalism and arsons. Lawyers suggest to lower a threshold of the criminal liability to 8-9 years.
Till now children younger than 10 years were reprieved in the Great Britain. However the children’s criminality brings attention to the question on lowering a threshold of bringing to trial, informs AFP referring to police of England and Wales.
The chief of the British transport police Yang Johnston stipulated that many crimes concern to a category of petty ones: so, from the general number in 3 thousand crimes about 1,3 thousand are acts of vandalism and arsons. In total 5,5 million crimes have been committed for a year in these two regions.
Nevertheless, even among lawyers there are those who cautiously support calling to account juveniles. So, lawyer Lawrence Li considers such initiative reasonable to the certain degree. “As the defender, I say, this is a bad decision, - declares Li. - But as the citizen I think it’s vital”.
Let’s note that on August, 23 all country was terrified with a story of the 11-years boy, shot in Liverpool by unknown teenagers during a ball game.
