The Canadian sentenced half-centuries ago to death for murder is acquitted

3 September 2007

Canadian Court of Appeal has justified the man, accused almost half-centuries ago in rape and murder of the schoolgirl. Then, 14-years old Stephen Truskott sentenced to hanging became the youngest inhabitant of the condemned cell.
On Tuesday the court has unanimously recognized the previous verdict as judicial error, informs Reuters.
In 1959 Truskott was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of his schoolmate, 12-years old Lynn Harper.
Judicial proceedings lasted two weeks having sentenced Truskott to hanging. Later the gallows had been replaced with imprisonment, and in a result the young man has spent in prison 10 years of his life.
This process has become one of the most scandalous cases of mistake in a history of legal proceedings in Canada. Public discussion around the verdict was developed with new force when condemned in 2000 has returned the closed case publicly having declared about his innocence.
Actually, since 2006 judicial proceedings on this case have been conducted again. New witnesses appeared in court, and advocacy has had an opportunity to get to know with results of investigation which were concealed earlier.
